Pope Benedict XVI Encyclicals--August 13 - 27

I am very frequently asked if we ever offer anything to study the Encyclicals, especially those of Pope Benedict XVI whose writings have been so impressive and fruitful. They are each beautiful examples of biblical exposition, demonstrating the clarity and depth of the Catholic understanding of Holy Scripture. If you are looking for Bible study that comes from the very best of the Catholic Tradition, here it is!

Bible Studies to Build Upon

May 21

Preparation for Pentecost: A closeup look at Acts chapter 2. We will examine the Old Testament sources of St. Peter's Pentecost Day sermon to see how what he said on that day has continuing and powerful impact on our life as Catholics right now.

May 28:Memorial Day, No Class

June 4

Life in the Holy Spirit: A closeup look at I Corinthians chapters 12 and 13. These two chapters form a rhetorical unit that continues in chapter 14. We will explore a deeper understanding of divine love, its source and characteristics, as the comprehensive and most important manifestation of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

June 11

The formation of Christian character: A closeup look at 2 Peter 1:1-10 and Hebrews chapter 12. We will see what these texts tell about how our interior lives must be forged through the direct action of the Lord in our hearts in the context of the difficult world in which we must live our present lives.

June 18

Distinguishing truth from falsehood: A closeup look at 1 John 4 and Jude. The essential question for this session: How does a Catholic discern the truth in a culutre of competing truth claims including the rejection of any stable commitment to absolutes?

June 25

The truth about ourselves: A closeup look at Revelation 3: 14-22 as it pertains to ongoing conversion, self-examination and the Sacrament of Penance.
